What the Hell Happened?

Thursday, May 4th, 2006

Those of you reading along at home are probably wondering what the hell happened to Mixed States, Recombinants and Upper Bounds for the past, oh, 36 hours.  Well, it seems that the server they are hosted on had a filesystem error and what was supposed to be a couple of hour fix stretched out all night.  My host, Site5, decided not to email people who’s domains were down and instead put up a forum thread to display announcements.  They finally managed to get it up but screwed up the Ruby on Rails (which the Mixed aggregates run on) royally.  They fixed part of the install and it wasn’t until 11 hours after I had given them the solution that they had fixed the last broken part.

They managed to lost all of the files on this subdomain (without informing me) and managed to prevent the aggregates from doing anything at all.  I’m sorry for the downtime and I will be doing me best (i.e., writing angry emails or switching hosts) to keep this from happening again.  I can’t believe they didn’t even contact us, their customers!

New Feeds

Thursday, May 4th, 2006

Added the Backreaction group blog, Jose Antonio Ortega Ruiz, Rob Knop and Brad Hagan (Bradley?) to Mixed States. Give them some love. Thanks, Sean!

Note: I don’t add people who are anonymous. Kind of goes against what the Mixed aggregates are all about, you know? Not hatin’, just sayin’.

Update: Added Dmitri Terryn and Urbano Franca, as well.

Up

Everything’s back up, but I’ve got to rush off to a quantum mechanics final.  I’ll talk about what happened later.

Downtime

Wednesday, May 3rd, 2006

Yeah, all the Mixed aggregates are down, because the server they are hosted on went kaput last night, and my hosts seem to have messed up their Ruby on Rails install (which Mixed is based off of). I’ve sent off a notice with the specific problem, and, hopefully, I will hear back soon.

Upper Bounds

Monday, May 1st, 2006

I’ve popped up another new aggregate, Upper Bounds. Upper Bounds contains all kinds of goodies from computer scientists such as Lance Fortnow, Suresh Venkatasubramanian, Scott Aaaronson, Dave Bacon and more. If you’ve know of a website that should be added, go ahead fire it at me.

To Infinity

Added quite six new feeds to Recombinants including a bioethics blog which is a nice bit of spice. You will love them.
